CBSE scraps additional subject option for private students
Times News Network

The CBSE has removed the additional subject option for private candidates in the 2026 board exams without prior notice, leaving students stressed about their future. Many of these students who relied on this option for career shifts or entrance exams like JEE and NEET are worried that it would block them from adding subjects like Maths after a science stream such as PCB to become eligible for engineering. Even for those who are in a drop year, especially those who were relying on the flexibility of this option, the change means months spent planning and preparing for a backup option which no longer exists.

The additional subject option has for long served as a corrective tool and a means for students to realign their career goals. But its elimination, without any alternative mechanisms, will deprive students of second chances that private candidacy involves.

CBSE conducts exams for private students along with the board’s main exams. As per the official timeline, students are expected to fill their application forms latest by September 30, 2025, with late submissions allowed till October 11, 2025.
